I love coming into the freiraum, just the way it smells. It’s a place where I take some time out once a week. And immerse myself in a world that I’ve never been able to access before.

Weekend workshop

basics of (digital) photography 1+2

Artistic photography: switch off the automatic settings
Good photos don’t happen by chance – they result from an understanding of, and the conscious use of, light, the camera and composition. In this two-part workshop, you’ll learn the technical basics of (digital) photography. You’ll discover how to use your camera deliberately rather than on automatic – and in doing so, become the creator of personal, striking photographs. And you’ll see that photographic technique is a joy.

The first part of the workshop focuses on the key technical concepts: the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), focal lengths (lenses) and their effect on the image, sharpness and depth, light and atmosphere. Through practical exercises, you’ll learn how these settings influence the look of your images and how to master them confidently using the camera you bring along.
The second part of the workshop builds on this and shows how you can use the technical aspects specifically to develop your own visual language. Instead of relying on pre-set automatic programmes, you’ll decide for yourself how your photos should look. Step by step, you’ll bring out the best in your photographic vision.

Both parts are offered here together as a weekend workshop in which one builds on the other. However, they can also be booked individually – independently of one another – as intensive one-day workshops.
The seminar group is limited to a maximum of 12 participants. Drinks will be provided at freiraum. A 60-minute lunch break is scheduled, which participants are free to spend as they wish.
Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance.

Weekend workshop

street photography in berlin

Street photography is the ever-changing, fascinating daily quest to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. It’s about seeking out those special moments – often visible for just an instant – that tell compelling stories before they vanish again.

The aim of this workshop is to sharpen your eye for distinctive subjects and to further develop your own photographic style.
To start with, we’ll hold a focused seminar on street photography, image composition, ethics and the history of photography. Then we’ll head out – to the places where Berlin is loud, quiet, quirky, beautiful and full of surprises. Everyone will take photos with their own camera; we’ll discover subjects, discuss ideas for shots and let the city guide us.
On the second day, we’ll look at the photos we’ve taken. Together. Appreciatively. And honestly. With constructive feedback and plenty of suggestions for your individual photographic journey.

Street Photography in Berlin is designed as a 2-day workshop and is offered at weekends (Sat+Sun) and on public holidays/long weekends. It’s also suitable for visitors to Berlin – alongside intensive workshop sessions, there’s plenty of time left for other things to do in Berlin.
The workshop group is limited to a maximum of 12 participants. Drinks are provided at freiraum.
Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance.
